YourAgeMeets reports findings from a survey of 3,470 active members, highlighting clear profile photos, detailed “About Me” sections, verification, and personalized messages as factors associated with profile trust. Respondents also flagged rapid off-platform requests and vague profiles as concerns.
-- YourAgeMeets, an online social communication platform for seniors, has published the results of a platform-wide member survey that was carried out to examine which profile elements most influence trust and engagement decisions in the period before a first message is sent. A total of 3,470 active members participated over a three-week period.
The findings are able to indicate, in fairly specific terms, where trust is built on a profile page before any direct exchange takes place, and where it tends to break down.
About the Survey
The YourAgeMeets Profile Trust Survey was delivered as an in-platform opt-in prompt to active members (defined as those who had logged in at least once in the prior 30 days and had completed basic profile setup). All 3,470 responses were collected anonymously, and no personal data was linked to any individual result. The survey itself comprised 10 questions in a mix of single-select, ranked-priority, and open-text formats.
Key Findings
Finding 1: Profile Photo Is the Top-Ranked Trust Signal, Closely Followed by the Written Bio
72% of respondents said a clear, natural-looking, recent profile photo was essential or very important to their comfort level before sending or responding to a message. In the survey, it was placed as the highest-ranked individual trust signal overall. However, the margin over the written bio finding is a narrow one.
When asked to describe what "quality" actually meant to them in practice, respondents did not describe professional photography. They described visibility: a photo where the person's face is clearly in frame, a recent-looking image with a natural expression, rather than an obviously outdated or formal one.
In addition, 21% of respondents said that a profile with no photo, or with a low-resolution or obscured image, was enough to stop them from reading the rest of the profile at all.
Finding 2: A Complete "About Me" Section Ranks a Close Second
67% of respondents named a well-written, personal "About Me" section as a decisive factor in whether or not they would engage with a user, just five percentage points behind the top-ranked photo signal. The two are close enough in the data that it is not possible to describe one as clearly dominant over the other.
When participants were asked about what would make them trust a written bio, their answers were fairly consistent about a couple of things. They cited specificity with regard to interests, experience, and values, not generalizations. Another element was a conversational tone, and if the language seemed like a template.
Finding 3: Identity Confirmation Status Influences Comfort, Particularly Among Newer Members
It appears that 61% of those surveyed felt that having verified that a member has gone through the identity verification process on the platform would increase their comfort in evaluating such profiles. This is particularly true of newer members, specifically those who have joined the website in the last three months, since account verification holds the most weight when building trust.
YourAgeMeets uses a recognized external provider for its profile verification process. Further information on how the platform approaches member safety is available in this overview of YourAgeMeets security features.
Finding 4: Personalized Opening Messages Outperform Generic Ones
54% of respondents said the quality of a first message was the largest trust signal after an initial profile review. Within that group, the general preference was for personalization rather than cleverness, and for warmth over speed.
Among qualities that made a first message credible, the most highly ranked one was the fact that it made a reference to something in particular from the recipient's profile. The second one was a warm and respectful tone, while the third one was an opportunity to respond since there was a question in the message.
Finding 5: Requests to Move Off-Platform Are the Most Widely Recognized Trust-Reducing Signal
43% of respondents selected "someone quickly suggested moving the conversation off the platform" as the behavior that made them feel least comfortable, and it was the highest-ranked item in a multi-select question about trust-reducing behaviors.
Other trust-reducing behaviors identified by respondents included: an empty or vague "About Me" section (58%), a message that felt copy-pasted and non-specific (49%), and inconsistency between what a profile stated and what the person wrote in their messages (44%).
Summary Data

Statement from the YourAgeMeets Survey Team
"Seniors have become one of the most engaged segments of digital communication, yet the industry holds relatively little data on what specifically builds their confidence in another person's profile before they decide to reach out. That gap is what this survey set out to address. What we found is that for this demographic, trust is not shaped by security features alone. It is built through clarity, consistency, and a felt sense that the other person is who they present themselves to be."
